WINNERS OF THE WEPLER-FONDATION LA POSTE 2009
Price Wepler - Fondation La Poste
HISTORY OF THE PRIZE

Our News

Created by the publishing house Abbeses, the Wepler-la Poste Foundation Prize emanates from the world of independant bookshops, and has made an alliance between a prestigious right bank brasserie, the Wepler, and the most popular public corporation which exists: la Poste (the Post Office).  The aim is to give back to the Montmartre butte (or mound), where formerly Max Jacob, Francis James, Stéphane Mallarmé, Paul Verlaine, Henry Miller and so many others were regulars, a litterary aura which measures up to its libertarian tradition.

Too many of our writers of contemporary literature are not given ‘a voice’:  the Wepler- la Poste Foundation, through its patronage and in total liberty, aims to pay them a new tribute.  Seeking to put literature back onto center stage by a rotating jury system, it will once again try to clear up a certain confusion on the scale of literary values and to give back a taste of the forbidden fruit to the texts of great writers who are sometimes left out of a system devoted only to figures.

It privileges styles, writings and words in a way that one can only rarely find on the market of words.

The Wepler-La Poste Foundation Prize is worth 10 000 euros and the special prize, worth 3000 euros, aims to reward a work which has a certain audacity, excess or quality that resolutely avoids any commercial ambition.

The 10th Anniversary of the Wepler-La Poste Foundation Prize

On the 10th anniversary of the Wepler-La Poste Foundation Prize, we wanted to reaffirm its foundation values, namely the devotion to, and strong support of a contemporary literature which is fast changing, demanding, and forever creating new possibilities for the novel.  We wanted to keep this Prize free from all commercial and fashionable criteria, which, as we know from our experience in the Art World, is not an easy thing to do in view of the fact that we are in the realm of pure literature.

The ambition of our Prize is to become everlasting and to have real meaning.  A winning author one year does not mean that the previous year’s winner will be forgotten.  One award does not wipe out another.

We felt as though we were writing a story, and year after year adding scripts which made up a legible and important constellation in today’s literary landscape.  We also wanted to quite simply acknowledge the unshakeable commitment of our authors to produce works.

The work of these last 10 years means that it is possible to make all the winning authors of the Wepler-La Poste Foundation Prize reappear by way of a text or unpublished work in the form of surprise graphics.
